Coldplay é uma banda de rock alternativo formada em 1998 em Londres, Inglaterra. O grupo é composto pelo vocalista/pianista/guitarista Chris Martin, pelo solo guitarrista Jon Buckland, pelo baixista Guy Berryman e pelo baterista/multi-instrumentista Will Champion. Coldplay tem 32,5 milhões de álbuns vendidos, e são também conhecidos por seus hits singles, tais como "Yellow", "In My Place", "Speed of Sound" e os vencedores do Grammy Award "Clocks" e "Viva la Vida" .

O Coldplay possui uma sonoridade próxima a de outros artistas como Radiohead, Oasis, Jeff Buckley e Travis. Outras influências são U2, R.E.M, Pink Floyd, John Lennon, A-ha, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Tom Waits, The Flaming Lips, Neil Young, Echo and the Bunnymen e, mais recentemente, Johnny Cash e Kraftwerk. Cash foi inclusive convidado pela banda a gravar uma música pendente, mas morreu antes de fazê-lo.

Desde o lançamento de A Rush of Blood to the Head, seu segundo disco, o Coldplay tem também apoiado várias causas políticas. Eles têm advogado pela campanha "Make Trade Fair" da Oxfam e pela Anistia Internacional. A banda também participou de vários projetos de caridade como o "Band Aid 20", o "Live 8" e o "Teenage Cancer Trust". Chris Martin também protestou contra a invasão do Iraque e apoiou John Kerry. Em novembro de 2008, o vocalista anunciou que a banda pretende se separar até 2010 mas, duas semanas depois, ele disse que o caso nao era esse, e que a banda planejava gravar e lançar o sucessor de Viva la Vida já em 2009..
